Apr. 20, 2006 - Ponderings from the past
We're in a drought right now, praying for rain tomorrow. We haven't had rain in weeks and weeks.
It got me thinking about living at the camper after Katrina. When we first got there, we didn't have water and sewer. Everything went through tanks. It was easy to use a whole tank of water in a day with 5 people and a dog. But, the tank only got filled every 2 or 3 days. The boys would do their "quick potty" outside on a tree, so the black water wouldn't get too full. We used lots of diaper wipes to keep clean as possible. Baths were actually a rarity. It's hard to believe that in our age, we had to be careful how many baths we took. Everyone was pretty clean for church! When we moved to the house, I remember how everything that had been at the camp smelled. It was the smell of....dirt.
We eventually got water and sewer there. And it was a real celebration. But, hot water only lasted about 45 seconds, so baths were still short and rare. At least we could wash dishes and keep things a little cleaner with wet rags and all. But, there wasn't much grass around the camper. It was dirt, and that's why it smelled like dirt.
I have no point to this post. I just want to put these things down in writing. For some reason, I feel compelled to remember what it was like. As much as I want to forget, I need to remember.
Thank you Lord, for watching over us and keeping us fairly sane through those times. Thank you for helping us to appreciate all the little things. Thank you for blessing us, and helping us to move on, and begin to heal.

Mar. 24, 2006 - The Frog and the Toad
We've discovered 2 new friends that have had our family laughing so hard this week. The Frog and the Toad books by Arnold Lobel are Jordan's new favorites, and I ordered him eight more from Amazon.com.
Speaking of which, for those interested, Amazon is having a "Buy 3 get the 4th one free" sale. So, I paid around 26.00 for 8 books. That included tax and shipping. Not bad, I think. Besides, I have 3 little guys that will hopefully all enjoy reading them at some point.
I've so been enjoying my new home. We bought the boys a swingset this week. Cayden turned 4 on Wednesday and asked for a swingset for his birthday. We don't normally give such large gifts, but it's something we would have gotten them anyway. I really need to learn how to post pictures on my blog for all of you to see.
I took some beautiful pictures the other day of the boys in the clovers. While I think my sons really are gorgeous, I was also highly impressed with my photography skills!
I've been cooking, of course! My bread seems to be getting so much better. I thinkI just needed to knead it a bit longer in my KitchenAid, and not add quite so much flour. I also started putting a bit more yeast in it. Yesterday, I finally got some wheat gluten and lecithin. I'm looking forward to adding these and seeing how it changes my final product.
Oh, this is what happens when you don't post for 13 days, I guess. I could just ramble on and on...
Perhaps, I will just wait and post later. I need to say thank you to someone, anyway. One of my "commenters." *smile*
Off to finish "The Frog and the Toad" now...

Mar. 13, 2006 - Insured: To Be or Not To Be...
So, it's that time again. Annual enrollment at Christopher's work.
It'd be $70/week for him to insure he and I. The kids can still get state insurance. I know that $70/week may sound like a drop in the bucket for some, but not for us. In fact, it really makes a huge difference in the budget. We're debt free except for our mortgage and a 60/mth student loan payment. Our mortgage is about 25-30% of his take home pay(depending on his overtime).
I *know* health insurance is important. It's been on my mind a great deal lately. It's one of the biggest holes in our financial picture. Yet, it's EXPENSIVE.
Chris is frustrated. He feels like he's not doing enough. I don't know how to make him feel better. We've been so pleased with our finances overall. We have a nice savings account. But, this could be the difference between decent and broke...
Wisdom...God...please...thank you.

Mar. 10, 2006 - TGIF!
I'm really looking forward to the weekend. I miss DH terribly, and we have a "hot date" planned tomorrow night. We're not going anywhere, but I get to stay home and pamper my husband, and I've a feeling he'll be returning the favor. *grin*
Fridays are now Pizza Day at our house. My family loves homemade pizza. I went to the store last night and picked up a package of pepperoni and some italian sausage. I also have a big pack of canadian bacon. I know this stuff will go bad before I use all of it, so I've decided to make little "pizza packs" to put in the freezer. Each pack will have a combo of meats in it, and on Fridays I can pull out a baggie and get started.
I've tried so many recipes for Pizza dough and sauce. Most of the sauce recipes started with tomato sauce and I'd add dozens of things to it, let it simmer, and voila... a rich, thick pizza sauce. Well, last week I tried something new and we LOVED it. I don't care for a really rich sauce, and this is mild and very easy and delicious.
Pizza Sauce (courtesy of "Thefreshloaf.com - Pizza Primier)
1 28oz can crushed tomatoes
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 Tablespoon garlic powder or 4 or 5 cloves of crushed garlic
2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar or lemon juice, or a combination of the two (I used about a tablespoon of lemon juice because it's what I had)
salt and black pepper to taste
It's so easy and so good. If you ever try it, let me know what you think. I'm going to start practicing my breads a bit more this week, too. I've got to go find some gluten and Lechtin. WalMart didn't have either. Le sigh.
Well, off to clean and teach. Have a great weekend! I know I will. *smile*

Mar. 8, 2006 - Dinner was sooo good...
Broiled Tilapia Parmesan - courtesey of Phoebe on allrecipes.com, my changes in parentheses.
INGREDIENTS:
* 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
* 1/4 cup butter, softened
* 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
* 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
* 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
* 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
* 1/8 teaspoon onion powder
* 1/8 teaspoon celery salt ( I didn't have this, so used garlic powder and some Tony Chacheres instead)
* 2 pounds tilapia fillets (I used all the topping, but just over a lb. of Tilapia)
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat your oven's broiler. Grease a broiling pan or line pan with aluminum foil.
2. In a small bowl, mix together the Parmesan cheese, butter, mayonnaise and lemon juice. Season with dried basil, pepper, onion powder and celery salt. Mix well and set aside.
3. Arrange fillets in a single layer on the prepared pan. Broil a few inches from the heat for 2 to 3 minutes. Flip the fillets over and broil for a couple more minutes. Remove the fillets from the oven and cover them with the Parmesan cheese mixture on the top side. Broil for 2 more minutes or until the topping is browned and fish flakes easily with a fork. Be careful not to over cook the fish.
Christopher loved it, and so did the boys. Served it with broccoli, potatoes, and a green salad. I plan to use this one for entertaining. Now, who to entertain???

Mar. 8, 2006 - Sump Pumps aren't Monsters!
They've got this thing in our backyard. Right by our porch. It almost looks like a black hole with a monster in it. We found out it was a sump pump. No, we don't have a basement. Apparently, our outtake lines for our septic are higher than the intake, so we had to have a sump pump to make everything work right.
Unfortunately, as of yesterday, it wasn't working right. I went outside to find a nice little puddle of blackwater, and looking down the black hole, I noticed it was much fuller and smellier than it ought to have been. I called Christopher, who basically said, "Call the plumber." Sewage just wasn't in his interest or expertise.
Thankfully, my husband showed up at home a little later feeling much more confident. Have I mentioned how attractive he is, even when he's working on a sump pump? Well, he pulled the mysterious monster (which turned out to be a puny lil sump pump) right out of the hole! It wasn't nearly the disaster we thought it was, but it was clogged up with some paper towels. We cleaned it up, gave the kids got a nice lecture of what goes down the toilet, and all was good again. Stinky water went away, and Christopher was proud to have conquered the monster in the black hole.
Now, to call and cancel the plumber....

Mar. 6, 2006 - Started school again!
Well, today was our first day to do school in our new house. It went *soooo* well. It's amazing how much better school is when you have some space. :) We did reading, math, spelling, and some writing. Not a ton, I know, but it's a start.
I went on Sonlight today and ordered the Singapore Math 2 kit, Extra Practice, and Word Problems. I love Singapore, but I find the extra books to be a necessity. I also got Spelling Power. I'm hoping that'll be all we need for Spelling curriculum. One thing I'm realizing is that too many consumables will get really expensive with 2 more little guys coming down the way. I already have SOTW 2, and bought the CD's this time, also. I think all the kids will enjoy them.
The previous owner of the house left us an old piano. It's by no means perfect, but I've a feeling it'll be plenty to get Jordan started. Hopefully, we can start learning together soon.
I made bread today, too. It was good, but the old stove here doesn't cook all that well. The outside cooked much faster than the inside. I'm debating a new stove a bit sooner than I originally intended. We'll have to see. I'd like to hold off as long as possible, but I can't do without a good stove. I love to cook.
The weather has been beautiful. My darling husband actually got my new dryer set up yesterday, but I still used the clothes line this morning. It was so nice outside. I was still incredibly proud of Christopher. He had to change out some wires, and add some new stuff and even made a nice little wooden cover for his plug-in thing. He's becoming quite the handyman at the old homestead. *bright smile*
Life is good. Thank you, Lord, for taking care of us.

Mar. 3, 2006 - He's in control...
One of the things I wanted to be sure to put here for my own sake...
When I was on my way back to Mississippi, sometime in October, I was on the interstate crying and driving, and I was pretty devastated. Lots more had happened other than the storm (Note to self: Sherri), and I was nearing a breaking point, and right about then, God spoke to me. Yep, to ME. It was as clear as if He were sitting in my passenger's seat, and He said, "I am still in control, and my hand is still in everything."
It was a life changing moment for me. It was the moment that defined the next 6 months. Every time I doubted something I had said or the things that were happening around me, I'd remember those words my Lord spoke to ME.
I don't know where life is headed, even now. I used to have it all planned out. I had people in my life that I thought would be there forever, and they aren't. I have people coming in my life that I never expected... It's a journey, for sure.
One thing I do know, without a doubt...
God is in control and His hand is in everything...

Mar. 1, 2006 - A New Beginning...
There are many points in people's lives that they momentarily wish they could just "start over."
Six months, post-Katrina, we have a new home and new everything, and we're ready to just start over. I thought we'd pick up where we left off, and in some small ways we are, but mostly it's all a new beginning.
It's not a bad thing, though. I'm trying to keep in mind all the mistakes I made before, the clutter I allowed to accumulate, and where my priorities became skewed. Hopefully, I can tune things and change things a bit so that I like the bigger picture better now.
We've been here for 6 days now, and the changes in the kids are amazing. Noone really believed me when I said "the hurricane did it." But, now I'm sure that's what it was. Adrian, who never has had his own room until now, has slept in his big boy bed all by himself all night long since we've been here. He was waking up every night crying at the RV. (Oh, the RV....I'll save that for a completely separate entry....) Cayden and Jordan are improving, as well, but they're very anxious to go and get their toys from pawpaws. We had Christmas at my Dad's and they had to leave almost all their toys there. They haven't been able to play with them since. So, today we'll be making that little journey.
School will be offically restarting on Monday, and we're all very excited. We've been doing very little since the storm, but we're not discouraged.
Well, that's a quick update. Thanks for all your prayers and support. We're glad to be back...

Oct. 7, 2005 - Wiped Out...Literally.
So it's been awhile since I posted here. You see, August 23rd was the date of my last post, and while I'd had a rough day, I was optimistic. Life was still good. REALLY good. My family was great, and my cute little house was great. The cats and dogs were dandy. Everyone was happy. Jordan was thriving in school, and we were enjoying the heck out of it.
But then, on August 29th, our life changed in the most unforseeable way. Our home is gone. We lost our 2 cats. We lost every story book, school book, and notebook we had. We lost nearly everything we own. School came to a screeching halt as we sought refuge in a nearby state. The 15 feet of water that found it's way into our precious home, destroyed our lives as we knew it.
And you know what? Today things aren't much better. The house still sits in shambles, and our lives are only slightly better. Jordan just went to public school last week, because I haven't the mental ability to homeschool him right now. Friends and aquaintances sent new school books, but for the time being they sit on a friend's shelf...unused. I had to give him some stability, an outlet. He's enjoying it okay, but we both persevere just knowing it won't be an everlasting thing.
My husband and I are miles apart, as he continues at his job, only coming here on the occasional weekends that he has off.
I just want my life back....now.

Aug. 23, 2005 - Sometimes it's okay to be the devil's punching bag...
This past year I'm seeing a mini-revival in our family and friends circle. It's been a great thing, and I praise God for it.
On the other hand, I can just about *tell* you when someone close to me is on his way into the Kingdom, because the Devil gets mad...and he takes it out on me. Sunday was no exception. I was crying before the first song of praise and worship, and it wasn't joyful tears either. I felt to desperate...although I'm not sure of what I was so needing of?
After service, Kodie's mom went up to receive the Lord, and my husband finally began to recognize that there's 2 ways to go, and he's not going the right way! So yeah, PRAISE GOD, but man...the devil is ruthless. I knew it was purely a spiritual attack, and I knew I'd get through it, but it hurt. The day didn't get any better either. The highlight above and beyond church was BED.
I love you, Jesus. I love what you're doing in our lives, and the way you've been changing my heart. I thank you for my church, my family, and my friends. You are the King of Kings, and the Lord of my life.

Aug. 22, 2005 - A New Journey
Last week was filled with all sorts of school activities. Oddly, not just homeschool, however. I was busy with registration, scheduling, and getting ready to go back to college. Tonight is my first class, and I must admit... I have those "back to school" jitters!
The boys are doing fantastic. Jordan and Cayden will be starting AWANA soon, and both are looking forward to it. I'm so glad they have that opportunity.
I'll also be starting a new cell group at church. Since school and work dictate my schedule every night, except Sunday, I'll be going to Cell that night. I'm looking forward to this as well, as I believe God's hand is definitely in the "details."

Aug. 10, 2005 - The Queen Goes Back To School....
My boys and Miss Kodie won't be the only students in this house.
Tomorrow, I'll be at the admissions office of our local college. I've decided to pursue that degree in English, afterall. I'm very excited about the oppportunity, and even more importantly, so is my husband. He was very supportive and encouraging.
I'm almost... giddy

Aug. 10, 2005 - Charlotte's Web
Just last week, Jordan and I finally read the ever-so-anticipated Charlotte's Web. I'd been patiently waiting until the right time. I wanted it to mean something to him. I was looking for...impact.
So, we read...and read... It only took 3 days to finish it. Jordan stopped me only to be reminded who Fern was. Then the moment came...
I took a deep breath and read a bit slowly as I peeked over the side of the book to see Jordan's reaction. Confusion and sadness filled his eyes, and he looked over to me.
"Mom, I don't think this is a kids' book," he said. "It's too weird."
"You mean sad?" I prompted.
He nodded vigorously. "Yes, VERY sad." We chose to take a break, and Jordan took a bit of time to compose himself.
Perhaps I seem like a mean mom, being so proud of such a reaction. But, in all reality, I simply wanted to know that what I'm doing is working. Jordan is, indeed, immersing himself in the fictional worlds that I have invited him to.
Something else that I noted. At one point, Templeton carries on, ranting at Charlotte. Jordan looked over at me and said, "Mom, Templeton talks too fast!" I loved it. He didn't say, "Mom, slow down." He was too immersed in the story to even notice that it was *MY* voice.
The growth in my son has been so great. These are just little moments, written for myself, to help me recapture some memories later. I'm sorry if they seem trivial to anyone reading this. However, I hope they at least make a grain or two of sense.
I'm going to go read Mrs. Piggle Wiggle now.

I know they were little moments for your little guy, but I totally understand your excitement. I was encouraged and delighted as I read it. I look for the same kinds of reactions in my kids. It shows they are thinking. That's what we're looking for isn't it? It's great to hear a mom enjoying her kids.

Jun. 30, 2005 - Rainbow Rock and a Cold Margarita...
Yesterday, I went to enjoy a much anticipated margarita with my mom. While I was gone, I left Jordan to play "Rainbow Rock". I figure it'll quench his thirst for all things electronic, without turning his brain to mush. (For those that don't know, Rainbow Rock is a PC based math game.) He's approaching the end of 1A, and we haven't worked with any numbers above 20, although he can count to 100 and beyond.
Anyhow, I came home and he was adding double digit numbers and carrying over....IN HIS HEAD! I was so proud. So, he woke me at 7:30 this morning, to do math. What a great kid.
Maybe I should go have another drink and leave him to it again, eh? Just kidding.

Jun. 28, 2005 - Boys Will Be... Boys
I know I don't update often, but Cayden is making the headlines today. A few days ago, we were snuggling on the couch together, when this oh-s0-charming three year old looked up at me with sparkling green eyes. "Mommy," he said, "I just LOVE to lay on your girl parts." It's a good thing I wasn't drinking anything at the time, else it would have been spewed across my couch. There's some things I just don't expect to hear, and I think that definitely qualifies. But, it was incredibly funny, anyhow. When I told Christopher, he seemed to be...proud. As in a "that's my boy!" sort of way. There's no way this child will ever date, or even get out of my sight. I'm only *half* kidding, too.
Jordan is doing so great! He's reading, now. For the summer, we've been pursuing his interests, and have read some great books on sharks, pirates, and knights. We've also read some about King Tut. He loves the thought that a kid his age was actually a ruler!
Adrian is beautiful! He is beginning to communicate in English, although babyspeak is still his language of choice. He's got a full vocabulary of ooohs and gahhs. Lately, he's been showing some real affection for his dad, and it's amazing to watch his love develop.
Kodie is still with us. I don't know if she's doing me the bigger favor, or if it's the other way around. I feel so blessed to have her in our lives. She's an amazing young woman. She's away at church camp this week, and I will pray diligently that God will give her the answers she seeks.
Christopher was home at 3:30 yesterday! This is a big deal because he has worked so much overtime lately. I was starting to be able to relate to being a single mom. I've missed him fiercely. It was wonderful having him home. We had a great day. I'm so thankful for my soulmate.
Well, it's time to go do some school. We're just a tad bit "behind" but not so bad. We've decided to start our school year in January and end in December, so that is extending our first-grade year some. It''ll work to our advantage. Jordan will have some extra time to learn about his own interests, as well as what he *has* to study.
Have a great day,
Sunshyne

Mar. 12, 2005 - They Grow Up So Fast...
Christopher and Jordan are off to his first *real* Royal Rangers event. He's going to a Bike-a-Thon today to attempt a 6 mile ride. Christopher wasn't able to locate a bike, so he's going to jog along with the boys.
I'm here with the little ones. It seems like yesterday that Jordan, now 6, was my only child...the little one. Now, he's off running with the other kids, while the last 2 still remain under my wing. Time flies. It won't be long that the 3 M* brothers will be off together, doing boy things, while I anticipate their return home. Moments like these lead to my desire to have more children. I'm hardly ready to quit raising little kids. Babies are cute, but when they get just beyond the toddling stage is when the real fun begins for me.
Later today, they'll go to their cousin's birthday, and Christopher and I will go on a Scavenger Hunt at church. I'm looking forward to some time with my husband. A date we don't have to plan! We just have to show up with the mac and cheese (homemade, of course).
It's a beautiful morning. As soon as my back is better, I think I'll start on the garden and the flowers, and... oh the list goes on.
Enough for now...

Mar. 9, 2005 - Back Again...
It's been way too long since I've posted. Life has been full of changes, obstacles, and blessings. In November, Kodie came to live with us. What a wonderful thing! God has richly blessed all of us since we've been together.
In late January, I hurt my back...bad. It took a long time to fully heal, and the day I actually started to move around again, the rest of the family became quite sick. Oh, not all at the same time, mind you. They took turns, starting with Cayden. So, for about 4 weeks *after* I got better, someone else was sick. Then, we had a healthy week, and that was so wonderful. It was like an early Spring. Last week, I woke up sick with fever and chills. A few days later, I was down with back problems again. And that pretty much brings us to the present. I can't walk that great, but hey... Jordan can read!
I can't cook, can't clean, can't dance and play; so we've been reading lots and lots. Jordan is flying through his first grade reader. He's doing so wonderful in Math, too. What a great kid. I'm so blessed!
Cayden is learning to sing his ABC's. He's doing so well. I'm really impressed with his artistic ability, too. He loves to paint, color, and do any kind of craft. He's not a messy kid, either, so it's fun and easy.
Adrian is growing fast. He's still not talking much, but definitely learned how to get what he wants. Jordan seems to cater to his every need. Adrian loves it!
Christopher and I are doing just fine. I couldn't ask for a more perfect man in my life, although it does take some work to keep it that way. I'm really working hard on being a better wife, because he deserves nothing less than the best.
Did I mention the dog? MacKenzie is our new Welsh Corgi. She's a real pretty girl, too! We're quite happy with her. She was born on September 29, 2004.
Well, I'm back aboard. Hopefully I'll be writing frequently, once again.

Oct. 20, 2004 - Registered, Not Registered, Registered, Still Not Registered....
Monday presented it's own little fiasco. Christopher, the email expert, churned out this email on my behalf... such a darling husband. Thanks, love.
Dear , This e-mail is a notification to advise you into the problems with the Mississippi State voter registration program. This program is designed to allow voters to register through various State agencies, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Health. The problem with the system lies, in part, with these arms of the State. I initially registered to vote last year, when I obtained my Mississippi State driver’s license. I selected to become a registered voter, and never heard anything of it again. Later on, while utilizing the Department of Health, I was given another opportunity to register to vote. I decided to register again, just to be safe. Fast forward to now. My husband is receiving information and voter registration cards through the mail, and I have received nothing. Just today, after another reminder to vote came in my husband’s name, I decided to call the Voter Registration center in Gulfport, Mississippi, to assure that I was, in fact, registered to vote. What they told me was alarming. Not only was I not registered to vote, they had never even received the two applications I had filled out with two separate State facilities. I had to go on a wild goose chase, calling the DMV, both local and in Jackson, to track down my voter registration information.. What I learned through this process was even more alarming than I had initially suspected. The individuals I spoke with informed me that I was not the only one whom they had talked to in order to track down their lost voter registration application. In fact, many, many people were not registered to vote even though they had filled out the appropriate forms! From talking with these people, I cannot even begin to estimate how many Mississippi voters believe that they are registered, but in fact, are not registered to vote at all. This neglect on behalf of the State of Mississippi is an atrocity that denies the people of the United State of America the very right to vote. This problem could reach thousands of people in Mississippi alone, and if this neglect and abhorrent disregard is any indication, this problem may be spread beyond the borders of Mississippi into other states as well. My story is just one of many in this exact situation. Many people may not bother to investigate this matter any further as I did, and will be put aside when the time comes to choose a leader for their country. This failure to achieve their full potential as an American citizen is not their fault, but rather, that of the State of Mississippi. Mississippi is obligated to their citizens to forward this information to the proper authorities, which they are failing to do. It is my firm belief that this situation must be handled, and one of the fastest ways to shine a light on this grievous injustice is to contact my local news networks. This is why I am sending this e-mail to you, with my story, and that of countless other people. I can only hope that you will take it upon yourself to further investigate this matter, as I am most confident that you will not only be shocked by how neglectful the state of Mississippi is being in regards to voter registrations, but even more people will be shocked at the doorstep of the polls themselves when they are turned away or their vote disregarded. Sincerely,
Sunshyne M.
Nothing has come of it. I received an email from one newscaster asking for my phone number, but that was all. So, for some reason...noone really cares that people don't get to vote... even if they want to.

Oct. 1, 2004 - Happy Anniversary To Me!
Yesterday was my anniversary. Tonight we're celebrating, although we didn't get too bad a start last night. *smile*
Over the past couple days, people have asked me how long we've been married. I cringe at that question. I feel as if our opinion of marriage is so disintegrated. I tell them three years, and then resist the urge to convince them that we're happy, we have the right kind of marriage, and we'll last forever.
Christopher and I are soulmates. We're on the offense to save our marriage. For us, those moments of "marital decline" are just that; moments. We're learning that these negative times only serve to keep us apart as long as we allow. It's easier to be happy together. Sometimes we get awfully moody about life, but we're learing that our marriage is a refuge, rather than an extra burden. It's been a wonderful, amazing growth experience.
My husband is so eloquent with words. It never fails to amaze me when I read his writing. I told him yesterday that I wanted to get him a card, but nothing seemed to compare to the way I really feel. I love him so much, it hurts.
My most important ambition in life is to be a better wife. I want to serve the man I love in such a way that fosters the precious gift we've been given; our marriage. Christopher deserves the very best that I can give. I work each day to do a little better, try a little harder. I believe that we'll be together forever, and forever is the only thing I'll settle for.
So, yes, we've been married for 3 years, but we're going on forever...
